Sample Class: Trash Talk! The Psychology (and Unsustainability) of Garbage

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 7:00 PM until 7:45 PMCentral Standard Time UTC -06:00

Taught by Prof. Christie Manning, Director of Sustainability and Environmental Studies faculty member

We live in a time of multiple, converging environmental crises: depleted aquifers, air pollution, climate change, plastic pollution in the oceans. In Psychology of Sustainable Behavior, Prof. Manning argues that “environmental problems” do not exist; they are, in fact, human behavior problems. Crafting effective solutions to these issues thus requires starting with the human behaviors that cause them. This mini-class will introduce some of the psychological factors underlying one specific issue, one that is familiar to each of us: our trash.
